Walkabout
During Year of the Artist, for 12 months I was resident Artist at Nenthead Mines Heritage Centre in Cumbria.
A driving influence on the work made there was Georgius Agricola's 'De Re Metallica' originally published in 1556 and described as, 'the first mining manual based on field research and observation'.
The book is packed with beautiful engravings of medieval miners going about their labour. The drawings of these outlandish 16th Century people living in a world of extraordinary costume, architecture and plant life proved to be an irresistible force to simulate.
In my illustrations and videos I am performing actions visualy akin to those depicted in De Re Metallica. Coriographing other use of the site in the context of an interpretative visitors centre.
