If asked, I would tell you that ballast, the heavy stuff put in a ships
hold to improve
stability, is exactly what most people lack. Our journeys are storm-tossed
and we
cannot prevent ourselves drifting off course. And yet we all have a place
of origin and
a sense of direction, it is just that sometimes, when things get tough or
when we are
ill, we cannot maintain balance or head for a nearby port.
This recent work by Ashley Hipkin has been made during a Leverhulme Artist
Residency
with the Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. After this exhibition
the work will
be installed in June, in the new wing of Hexham Hospital.
