about us:

Allenheads Contemporary Arts is an independent art/education organisation established in 1994 by Alan Smith and Helen Ratcliffe.

We are based in an old Victorian Schoolhouse situated on a steep hill overlooking the village of Allenheads in Northumberland.

ACA aims to provide opportunities for the development of new ideas and work. The Old Schoolhouse is used as a laboratory and meeting place for artists, scientists and curators wanting to collaborate on ambitious projects involving both international and regional elements.

At ACA we aim to build up a varied interpretation of the environment through a wide ranging programme of research. Invariably the local community will make an essential contribution to a project, helping us ensure that our programme is developed with a sensitive regard for all social, historical and natural elements.

At Allenheads we have a residential studio, providing state of the art digital facilities for both still and moving image, as well as a range of more traditional studio and exhibition facilities.

We develop, commission and present innovative projects, disseminating the results to a wide audience, through web and broadcast projects, publications, symposia and exhibitions.
